They made me so mad that I broke my PS4 controllers and needed to get two new ones. All the mini games, timed stages and “fly trough hoops” challenges to get an orb (which you need) where the worst experience I ever had with a platforming adventure game in my life. This can all be linked to one element: Hunter and his bullsh!t. As stated in the title of the review, I broke two controllers in pure rage and hatred (yes, I know I have problems), it is still as bad as the original game, no, much worse, I think. However, the second one, Ripto’s Rage! will always be my arch nemesis.
Great platforming, various levels with unique themes, fun enemies and overall, a wonderful experience. It was also the game I played the most back in the day, so it was not that hard. The first game was easy, and I casually finished it. Even got so far to collect all the PlayStation trophies the game, which was a hard but fun challenge. I had fun playing all the games in order, collecting every gem, egg and rescuing all the dragons. I was always fan of the Spyro games and immediately bought this one when it came out. It knows what it is and doesn't try to be anything more. Most people would probably rate this an 8-9, but I give it a 10 based purely on my own nostalgia of the franchise and how grateful I am that we got an honest remaster without bloating the game with extra content to make it seem relevant. These games are remembered for their fantastical elements and whimsy, not brutal difficulty. You have to be perfect with some objectives. The flight levels could give some people trouble but that's about it. If you played the Crash Bandicoot remaster then know this follows a similar formula as do most PS1 platformers. These games aren't difficult by any means nor are they terribly long. Being able to play this is a dream come true. Spyro was the first Playstation game I got back in the 90s and I loved it then, and it was strange realizing how dated the polygons looked when I tried revisiting it a few years ago. The price for all three games is damn good.
The controls are fluid and responsive, nothing feels stiff at all.
